Each has a different roof and a different load, so the useful conversation here is about which of those three your building belongs to rather than about solar in general.

    Your distribution network operator is Electricity North West

    Electricity North West operates the distribution network across Greater Manchester, Lancashire, Cumbria and much of Cheshire. They own the poles, cables and substations and they decide your connection, which is a separate matter from your supply contract.

    Commercial arrays go through the G99 application route and must be approved before energisation. Electricity North West publish their connection application process and expected timescales, and applying at the point the design is settled rather than at the point of installation avoids the most common programme delay we see.

    Where a city centre supply is constrained, an export limited design usually resolves it. Given that most Manchester commercial buildings consume through the working day, capping export costs the business very little in real terms.

    The mill conversion problem, and where it is an opportunity

    Converted mills and warehouses across Ancoats, Salford and the surrounding districts are one of the defining building types here, and they are genuinely awkward for solar. Roofs are often pitched, sometimes northlight, frequently altered, occasionally listed and rarely designed for additional load.

    Northlight roofs deserve a specific note, because the glazed north facing planes that made them good workshops make half the roof useless for generation. The south facing slopes can still work well, so the honest answer is a smaller array on part of the roof rather than a refusal.

    Where the conversion added a flat roofed extension or a plant deck, that is often the better location. It is worth surveying the whole building rather than assuming the main roof is the only candidate.

    Universities, student accommodation and managed estates

    The higher education estate here is large, and both the universities and the private student accommodation operators run buildings with substantial year round base load in lighting, ventilation, hot water and communal services. That base load is what makes generation useful on buildings that empty out in summer.

    Student accommodation has an unusual seasonal pattern, with the lowest occupancy in the months of highest generation. It reads badly at first, but the landlord supply carrying communal plant runs regardless, and it is that supply the array offsets rather than the individual rooms.

    The summer vacation is also the practical installation window. Access is easier, disruption is lower and the programme can run without working around occupants.

    Does northern latitude actually matter

    Yes, but far less than people assume. Annual generation in Greater Manchester is modestly below the south coast, typically in the region of a tenth lower rather than the half that the reputation for rain suggests, and irradiance data rather than anecdote should drive the model.

    What matters far more than latitude is self consumption. A Manchester building that uses everything it generates comfortably beats a southern building that exports a third of its output, because avoided import is worth several times the export rate.

    Our indicative figures use a single national yield assumption, which is slightly generous here and slightly conservative in the south. A site specific model from the installer uses local irradiance data and the actual roof orientation.
