    Measuring what the system is actually doing

    An unmonitored array can lose a string for a year before anyone notices. Monitoring gives you generation, consumption, import and export in one place, alarms when output deviates from expectation, and the data you need for carbon reporting rather than an estimate.

    You cannot manage what you cannot see

    Most commercial sites have exactly one measurement point, the incoming meter, which tells you the total and nothing else. Sub metering and monitoring turn that single number into a picture of where the energy actually goes.

    The usual first discovery is base load. Consumption at three in the morning in an empty building is nearly always higher than expected, and it is the cheapest saving available because it involves switching things off rather than buying anything.

    The second discovery is peaks. Knowing which piece of plant creates the highest half hour explains a charge that often looks arbitrary on the bill.

    What to measure and how far to go

    Start with the incoming supply at half hourly resolution, then sub meter the largest loads: refrigeration, compressed air, HVAC, production lines, lighting circuits and any EV charging.

    There is a point of diminishing returns. Metering every circuit produces data nobody reads, whereas metering the handful of loads that account for most of the consumption produces decisions.

    Where a process is temperature or pressure driven, adding those measurements alongside energy makes the data far more useful, since it shows whether the energy was doing anything worthwhile.

    Monitoring generation and storage

    Once solar is installed, monitoring stops being a nice to have. Underperformance is silent: a failed string or a dirty array does not announce itself, and a system can lose a meaningful share of its output for months without anyone noticing.

    Good monitoring compares actual generation with expected output for the irradiance and flags the difference, rather than simply plotting a curve that looks plausible.

    For batteries, monitoring should show state of charge, cycles, throughput and the value of what the battery is doing, which is also the evidence you need for a warranty claim.

    Alerting, reporting and who acts

    Data with nobody responsible for it changes nothing. Define who receives alerts, what the thresholds are, and what action follows, and put that in the maintenance agreement rather than leaving it informal.

    Reporting should serve two audiences: an operational view for the people who can change something this week, and a summary view for finance and reporting obligations.

    Where carbon reporting is required, monitoring supplies the underlying figures. Using the appropriate published emissions factor and keeping the calculation auditable matters more than the headline number.

    Integration and getting the data out

    Systems that use open protocols and provide an interface for exporting data are far more useful than closed platforms, because your data can then sit alongside production, occupancy or weather information.

    Check data retention. Some platforms hold high resolution data for a limited period, which is a problem when you want to compare this year with the same period two years ago.
