Your distribution network operator is Northern Powergrid
Sheffield sits within Northern Powergrid's Yorkshire licence area, the same network that covers Leeds and the rest of the county. They approve connections and energisation under the G99 process for anything of commercial scale.
Heavy industrial sites often hold a high voltage supply, which changes the application. A connection at eleven kilovolts is a different technical conversation from a low voltage one, usually involving your own transformer, protection settings and a formal witness test before energisation.
Because these applications take longer, they should start early. On a site with an existing large supply the network headroom is frequently already there, but confirming it is a matter of asking rather than assuming.

Process load makes the arithmetic simple
Furnaces, rolling and forging plant, machining centres, extraction and compressed air produce a demand that dwarfs the building services load and runs continuously through the working day. Against that, even a large array is fully absorbed.
When every generated unit displaces an imported one, the value per unit is the full import rate rather than an export rate, which is the difference between a strong payback and a marginal one. It also removes the need for storage in most cases, because there is no surplus to store.
Demand peaks are a separate issue from volume. Solar does not reliably shave a peak, since the peak may occur when generation is low, so a capacity or peak charge problem needs its own answer rather than being assumed away.

Older works roofs and what they can carry
The building stock in the older industrial areas includes long span sheds, sawtooth and northlight roofs, and coverings that predate current expectations, including fragile cement sheet and asbestos containing materials in places.
None of that rules out an array, but all of it changes the sequence. A structural appraisal and a covering survey come first, and where asbestos is present the management plan governs what can be done and by whom.
Northlight roofs limit the array to the south facing slopes, roughly halving the available area. Where the site also has a modern flat roofed extension or a large yard, a ground mounted or canopy array is sometimes the better use of the same budget.

Advanced manufacturing and the newer estates
The newer advanced manufacturing and research facilities towards the Rotherham corridor are a different proposition: modern portal frame buildings, sound roofs, clean structural information and a load dominated by machining, testing and controlled environments.
These are the easiest sites to design for and the ones where a proper consumption analysis pays off most, because the load is high enough that array size is limited by roof area rather than by demand.
Where a site is part of a wider campus or park, check whether the supply is shared and who holds the metering, because that determines who can claim the saving.
