The best self consumption profile in the sector list
Refrigeration compressors run day and night, every day of the year. There is no shift pattern, no weekend, no shutdown and no holiday. Whatever an array produces is absorbed instantly by plant that is already running, at the full import rate rather than an export rate.
Better still, the load and the resource peak together. Ambient temperature drives compressor duty, so the hottest, brightest days of the year are also the days the store works hardest. Very few building types have that alignment.
The practical consequence is that a cold store is usually limited by roof area rather than by load. On most sites you can fill the available roof and still consume everything, which removes the export question that dominates warehouse projects.

Why the bill is so large, and where solar actually helps
Cold storage is among the most electricity intensive property types in the country, and the bill is not only unit rates. Capacity charges, distribution charges banded by time of day and the peak half hour all scale with a load that never lets up.
An array attacks the unit rate portion during daylight, which on a continuous load is a substantial share of annual consumption. It does not by itself touch the overnight period or the winter evening peak, which is where distribution charges are heaviest.
That is why the useful conversation on a cold store usually covers three things together: generation, load shifting, and how the site is charged. Looking at panels alone leaves money on the table, and an energy cost audit alongside the feasibility often finds savings that pay back faster than the array.

Thermal inertia is a battery you already own
A well insulated store holds temperature for a meaningful period without compressors running. Pre cool ahead of an expensive period, let the store coast through it, then recover afterwards, and you have shifted load without buying anything.
Done properly this is safe. It runs within defined temperature limits agreed with your technical team, with continuous monitoring and automatic reversion if temperature drifts towards the tolerance. Done casually, on a store with heavy door traffic or marginal insulation, it is not, and product integrity always outranks an energy saving.
The same characteristic makes the site an attractive candidate for flexibility markets, where a controllable, predictable load is worth more than a small one. Where refrigeration is already running on modern controls, most of the enabling work is configuration rather than capital.

Building the array on an insulated envelope
Cold store roofs are usually composite insulated panels rather than a structural deck with a separate covering. That changes how an array is fixed. Penetrations through the panel risk thermal bridging and condensation inside the build up, so non penetrative or panel specific fixing systems and correct detailing matter more than usual.
Structural capacity needs checking for the specific building as well. Many stores are tall, lightweight portal frames designed to a tight load case, and older units may have limited spare capacity or roof sheeting near the end of its life.
Roof mounted plant, condensers and their maintenance access also constrain the layout, and airflow around condensers must not be impeded, since restricting it would raise the very consumption the array is meant to reduce.

Adding storage, and how we work
Batteries make more sense here than on most sites, not because there is surplus generation to store, but because of the peak. Shaving the site's maximum demand affects capacity related charges, and the same asset can earn from flexibility services alongside the refrigeration plant.
Whether it pays depends on your tariff structure, your measured peak and your appetite for a longer payback, and it should be modelled from half hourly data rather than assumed. Storage costs are indicative in any early estimate and should be treated as a range.
