    Solar on farm buildings and spare land

    Farms combine large, simple roofs with seasonal loads and, often, land that could carry a ground mounted array. Agricultural solar can cut running costs on irrigation, grain drying, milking and refrigeration, and it can add a diversified income stream where the grid connection allows.

    A load that follows the farming calendar

    Farm electricity demand is unusually seasonal and unusually varied between enterprises. Arable holdings draw heavily for a few intense weeks of grain drying and conditioning after harvest, and comparatively little the rest of the year. Irrigated cropping pulls hard through the driest summer months, which is exactly when generation peaks.

    Dairy is different again. Milking has a sharp twice daily peak, morning and late afternoon, with plate coolers, vacuum pumps and water heating, and bulk tank refrigeration runs continuously in between. That continuous cooling load is the part an array serves best.

    Livestock housing adds ventilation, lighting and water heating with a long winter bias. Each of these produces a different answer on array size, so the cropping and stocking calendar matters more here than in almost any other sector, and a generic farm system size is close to meaningless.

    Barn roofs, and what stops them working

    Modern steel portal frame barns are among the easiest structures to work with. Large, simple, unobstructed pitches, straightforward fixings and a frame that usually has capacity. Grain stores and machinery sheds in particular tend to give more roof than the holding can consume.

    Older buildings are where projects stall. Asbestos cement sheeting is extremely common on agricultural buildings from the mid twentieth century and panels cannot be fixed to it. The route forward is to recover the roof and mount to the new covering, which often makes sense on its own terms given the age of those sheets, but it is a cost that must be in the picture from the start.

    Orientation and shading also matter more on a farm than people expect. Barns were sited for access and shelter rather than for solar aspect, and trees, silos and adjacent buildings can take a meaningful bite out of output. The assessment adjusts yield for orientation rather than assuming an ideal south facing pitch.

    Rural grid constraint is the real limit

    The binding constraint on farm solar is rarely roof area. It is the connection. Rural distribution networks were built for modest demand rather than for distributed generation, and in many areas the available export capacity is limited or effectively nil without reinforcement.

    That matters because a farm with a large roof and a modest, seasonal load will inevitably want to export. If export is capped, the scheme has to be sized closer to on site consumption, or paired with storage, or reconsidered.

    The distribution network operator makes that decision, and lead times can be long. It is checked at feasibility, before design and certainly before any commitment, and it is one of the first things an installer in the network will investigate on a rural site.

    Land, ground mount and diversification

    Where land is available, a ground mounted array can be far larger than anything the buildings support and becomes an income question rather than a cost saving one. That shifts the project into planning, land classification, connection applications and, frequently, a longer timescale.

    Rooftop arrays on agricultural buildings often fall within permitted development subject to size, siting and other limits, while ground mounted schemes almost always need full planning permission. Ground mounted arrays can also affect how land is treated under agricultural support schemes, so check the current rules with your land agent before committing acreage.

    Private wire supply to a neighbouring business is occasionally attractive where a large consumer sits nearby, but it carries genuine regulatory and contractual complexity and needs specialist advice rather than an installer's assurance.
